The Lunar Ensemble culminates its year-long residency at St David’s Episcopal Church with this special event, exploring the connections between the music of 1920’s Paris and the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe. This chamber concert will feature Danielle Buonaiuto, soprano; Stephanie Ray, flutes; and John Wilson, piano, and Professor Ned Sparrow providing narration. The Lunar Ensemble explores the two sides of Poe’s character as seen in his writing: youthful exuberance and love of all things beautiful; and intensely macabre and grotesque. In the first half, songs and solo pieces of Paris’ musical luminaries will vividly illustrate those ideas of Poe’s that resonated with the followers of décadence. The second half explores the outgrowth of music of the French composers into modernism, and mirrors the darkening of Poe’s character as the years went on. Intertwined with the musical offerings , Prof. Sparrow will offer readings of Poe’s poetry and philosophy, illuminating his style and bringing his character to life.
The concert is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $15 general admission and $10 students/retirees.
